Existence check: Does the cited case or statute exist?*

Search the exact citation in an authoritative legal database (Westlaw, LexisNexis, EUR-Lex).

Citation accuracy: Is the citation format correct?*

Verify case name, volume, reporter, page number, and year match the real source.

Holding verification: Does the source say what the AI claims?*

Read the actual holding or statutory text and compare it to the AI's characterisation.

Currency check: Is the authority still good law?*

Run a citator check (Shepard's, KeyCite) to confirm the case has not been overruled or the statute repealed.

Relevance confirmation: Does the citation support the proposition?*

Assess whether the cited authority actually supports the point being made in context.
